By Fatima Az-Zahraa Dadou
I heard my mom call my name, "Fatima Az-Zahraa". I turned and ran towards my grandparents' house thinking maybe she needed help preparing dinner. As I got closer to the house, I could tell that it definitely wasn't that she needed help with dinner. My mom held a grave face and my heart began beating fast and I already felt like crying, thinking of my 90 year old and most beloved grandmother back in Algeria. I bit my lower lip waiting for her to spill out the bad news and finally she did, "Haouri and his family were in a car accident." I held my breath and forced myself to whisper, "And...". She replied, "And they all died." Tears filled my eyes somehow knowing that it was true yet I was still in disbelief not being able to fully comprehend the loss of one of my favorite cousins, his pregnant wife, and year old son...it was heartbreaking.
