-Thank you so much for giving me the chance to interview you! To begin, Roxy, tell us a little bit about yourself and your personal interests.
Well, my full name is Roxy Natsu LaChance and I'm half Japanese, half American. I have one younger sister who is about 6 years younger than me. I love to read, listen to music, play sports, and play lots of games!
-Homeschooling offers amazing opportunities and everyone's experience is special. How has homeschooling affected you and how challenging do you find the time zone difference?
This is my 4th year homeschooling, two for kindergarten and first grade, and then last year for 9th grade and this year for 10th. Between those years, I had been going to a school on the military base here. So doing homeschool again was a big change for me. I needed to get used to setting my own schedule and following through my plans--which I still struggle with. Though it was sad not seeing my friends everyday, I have met great teachers and wonderful classmates virtually that help me continue. As you mentioned time zones, it is quite hard to find a reasonable time on both sides to talk over Skype. Scheduling calls well ahead of time really helps to keep things going smoothly. To put it this way, I'm studying while most of my teachers are sleeping!
-What are some interesting things you could share about Japanese culture? What is your favorite thing about Japan and least favorite?
Living in a household with parents of different backgrounds, I see that the Japanese culture is quite different from the American culture. There are, of course, the different foods and languages, but there are some things like the way people act and how they view things. My favorite thing about Japan would definitely be the food, especially the snacks. There are so many seasonal and special edition things in Japan too, which makes you never get sick of anything! My least favorite thing would have to be... maybe the weather. I honestly like pretty much everything here, but the weather can be pretty unpredictable and extremely hot, especially in the summer.
-Japan is quite a unique country that many of us would love to visit someday. How much diversity is there in Japan and how well is it accepted?
If you mean diversity as in the people of different backgrounds or foreigners, I do believe that there is quite a lot, especially in my area of Okinawa. That's mainly because of the military bases all over the island, but there's quite a number of tourists from nearby countries, like China, Korea, etc. Overall, I think that there is very little issues among the people about foreigners. I am definitely happy to see all these different people and welcome you all to visit!
-Although none of us know for certain what our future has in store for us, we all have our goals and hopes that we work towards. What are 5 things you would like to achieve in the future?
First and foremost, I'd like to finish my schooling on time. Sometime in the near future, I hope to find the right career goal for me and to reach it. Other things would include travelling to other countries and meeting old friends. This one is a silly one, but I am definitely going to get a dog as a pet--a German Shepard and a Golden Retriever as my buddies!
-Is there anything else we haven't covered that you would like to share?
I'd just like to add to my list of hobbies that I also take classes for gymnastics, ballet, swimming, and piano. I've been doing them since I was a young child, and these are some of the things that refresh me and keep me from burning out. It was my pleasure to be interviewed, Fatima! Thank you so much!
